Last year, 2013, I decided to have a go at getting the AFIAP distinction for photographers. There is a lot more to this than I initially thought and it was only after entering my first few salons that I realised this. One has to be meticulous about the number of salons they enter, keep accurate records on what was accepted or not, awards etc and have it all in a safe and secure location when it comes time to submit for the distinction. One of the easiest ways of doing this is to start an excel file and keep the records in there on how you do through the year. This can happen only once a year – generally at the start of a year. According to the IPF website
The AFIAP and EFIAP distinctions are gained through acceptances and awards at international competitions (salons). Further advancement can also be gained through the EFIAP levels. These may be applied for after holding the EFIAP distinction for a period of one year and they are the EFIAP Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
The number of acceptances and Salons that one needs to enter has changed for 2014 – as seen below in the image taken from the IPF website.
I will hopefully write a bit more about this once I get my form submitted before the end of the month and give some thoughts and view on the process that I used for this. Out of this distinction process I entered a Salon in Argentina – in which I got my first medal – an RSA Gold Medal in the F2 Sociedad Fotografica Salon for my image Comfy Chair 🙂 They posted the gallery here on facebook
I was really shocked that I got an award – it was really cool and humbling to receive an award – and a gold medal to boot :-). All in all it would not have happened without the work of a fellow photographer – Niall – and the model – Raphaella – who convinced me to shoot in the location and push myself to new heights with regards to my photography. Following on from that , the Salon contact me with regards to a bio, some 20-30 images from my portfolio – shown below – and a link to my website. So I said that I would write an article on it as it aint going to happen too often and also to make people aware – it can happen to any one 😉 Thanks for reading.
