Aisling in the woods
I had the pleasure of shooting with another great model tonight – Aisling Frawley – out in the woods in and around Keeper Hill in Tipperary, near Newport. I had just got a new camera that I wanted to test out and a friend of mine was going for his LIPF panel and he needed one more shot to complete it.
Anyways the shot seen here was taken with all natural light – under the tree cover within the woods itself. We did not have to travel far to find someplace nice and green for the shot but the light was low when we got there so we had to be quick about capturing some photos.
Niall was taking his images from away as he was using his 70-200mm lens and was looking for a portrait image – I, on the other hand, had my new 1D-X so I wanted to see what it could do and how accurate it would be on recording the scene. I have to say that I was impressed with how low I could shoot re shutter speed and still get sharp usable images. Impressive.
The image above was set up with Aisling sitting on a stump and I moved around and positioned the sun behind me – though it was hidden behind the trees and the clouds so the light was nice and soft and diffused. The image seen here was taken at ISO 1000 f2.8 at 1/60 of a second handheld – and it is sharp. I have looked at it on my large screen at home and it is sharp. I shot this at 200mm. I did some post processing in Photoshop and posted it online here then.

Kevin has had a love of all things wildlife from an early age. This is due, for the most part, from growing up and watching shows by David Attenborough on all types of plants and animals from around the world. Following on from this, travelling to see these exotic and rare species entered the equation and just over ten years ago, Kevin and a group of close friends and family starting travelling to do just that. However, seeing them was not enough and so photography was the mainstream solution on capturing these elusive creatures thereafter. Kevin's main photography passion is wildlife but he has since moved into the areas of portrait and landscape photography also. Living in and around the west coast of Ireland presents one with great opportunities for all of the above forms of photography ˆ as does travelling half way around the world.
